Winter’s Back

Gee, I haven’t blogged for quite some time now.  That’s because our weather has been exceptional and I am taking full advantage of it.  There are many things to do in preparing for your visit which I am sooooo looking forward to.  Only 33 days until we take our first 2012 flight into Uchi.

Having said that, I wanted to share with you a picture of what I woke up to this morning.  Not to worry, the snow will be gone by tomorrow.

Chicago Sportshow

Well, as luck would have it, the first day of the show brings in Chicago’s first snowfall with icy roads.  Thinking it was going to be a very slow evening, quite the opposite.  We had a good turn out and I do want to thank all of those guests who ignored the weather and still came to visit me at the show.   I had a great time chatting with all of you and certainly do appreciate your business.  Ken, Steve and Paul - welcome back to Uchi as we’ve missed you the past couple of years. Tony, Angelo, Walt, Chuck - it’s always a pleasure to visit with you on “your turf”.

Judy at the St. Louis Sportshow

You know the ol saying “The older you get……….

Well here I am sitting in Chicago awaiting my next sportshow.  St. Louis was a great show having met so many new people and enjoying the company of Clyde.  Clyde is one of our regular guests who was kind enough to help out in the booth all day Saturday.  Honestly, I think he did a better job than I, but we’ll keep that under our hats.

Clyde emailed me a couple of rather bizarre fishing pictures I just had to share with you. The northern was actually caught with the walleye in it’s mouth.   Thanks for everything Clyde.  Thanks Ron, Tom, Bill and the rest for visiting my booth and having shared your Uchi Lake experience with me.  Sincere thanks for all the kind words about our services and fishing and I wish you all well.

Northwestern Fires

Luckily, Uchi Lake was not affected by the severe fire season in 2011.  The winds were on our side as the fires kept moving north and away from camp.   However it didn’t stop us from worrying about fellow operators and the hundreds of brave firemen who were battling the blazes.  These pictures I am about to share were sent to us from a staff member’s boyfriend who was one of those brave firefighters.  Click on the image.

Summer Heat

Fifth day into the hunt and it’s freezing up here.  Getting caught up on all my wonderful emails from guests and updating website.  Had to laugh at this one.  I’m sure you all remember how hot the summer was this year.  I just had to cool Shaboo so took her for a swim.

2011 Sportshows

Come visit me at one of the All Canada Sportshows listed below.  I’m always happy to discuss our operation and while your there, be sure to pick up a copy of the All Canada Adventure guide.  Members of the All Canada Staff visited Uchi Lake this past summer and wrote an excellent article called “Pass It On”. The end of the article is particularly interesting when it comes to our “kids”.  Enjoy!!!

Life is Sooooooo Good

I’ve been rattling on and on about the wildlife at Uchi , more so than usual. It’s just that there is so much activity going on, I feel I have to share it with you. This is one of the most unique pictures I’ve seen of a cow moose with her baby - photographed by Dave Vaughn. The same Dave that released a 29 inch walleye yesterday, then his buddy a 45 inch northern.

The Castro party also had a 45 incher on their line but it got away before getting a picture. I’m still having trouble getting my guests to post their fishing reports as the days just fly by and we run out of time. Still trying, still trying and still trying……..

Family Update

Well, well, well….after posting my last blog the partridge eggs have hatched and mom has left the nest with her babies. This is all that was left behind. You can see that two did not survive however mom has 11 to look after as it is. She won’t be far away but guaranteed she will be far enough so as to protect her young

Cheryl, Phil and Scott Hildebrand brought to my attention two more additions to the Uchi Family. Here is another picture of eggs but this time their loon eggs - look closely to see the nest tucked under the shrubs.

Loon Eggs

So much excitement on Uchi Lake this year. Cheryl was lucky enough to capture a cow moose with her calf following closely behind as they exit the lake.

And mother partridge was just spotted by Walt as they waddled past his cabin. Walt is a darn good photographer so I anticipate receiving some nice pics of them throughout this week.

Addition to the Uchi Family

Nestled in the bush beside cabin #4 is a mother partrige sitting on her nest protecting her 11 small eggs. She’s been on the nest for roughly 2 weeks now. Every once in a while we silently go down to see if there is any progress made. She doesn’t even flinch, not a feather moves. We are quite excited to see her babies successfully join the rest of the world. It should be any day now.

Our second family addition is a nest of chicks conveniently or not so conveniently tucked away in our minnow shed. You can bet that mom and dad stay very close and get pretty excited whenever we enter the shed. The chicks are just getting feathers now but still too young to do anything on their own. Larry was careful when taking the picture of their nest, after all, the parents of the chicks have claimed the shed as “their home” for the time being.
