Judy, just a short note to tell you how much the five of us (Jim, Tom , Tom , Jack, & I) enjoyed fishing Uchi Lake. As you know Jim and I have made Uchi our annual trip for more then six years bringing with us from time to time my sons and son-in-laws and know Jack (2nd visit), Tom & Tom. Once again we moved the benchmark up by caching and releasing 185 walleye’s on the second day of our trip, and that was without fishing any of our evening hot spots. Wish you the best.

CHUCK AND I WERE CASTING SPINNERS TO THE REEDS OFF THE ROCK PILE BY THE ISLAND ACROSS FROM THE LODGE. I GOT A NICE STRIKE AND BEGAN CRANKING IN A NICE 18″ WALLEYE AND SUDDENLY GOT ANOTHER SLAM ON MY LINE, HEAVIER AND STRONGER.AS I GOT THE FISH TO THE BOAT WE COULD SEE A LARGE (36″) NORTHERN HAD THE WALLEYE IN IT’S MOUTH CROSSWISE AND AS SOON AS IT GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO SEE THE BOAT RELEASED THE WALLEYE AND HEADED FOR DEEP WATER. WE CONTINUED TO CAST THAT EVENING AND WENT BACK OVER THAT SPOT WITH NO SURPRISING RESULTS.
WE CAME IN FOR THE EVENING AND WERE CARRYING OUR GEAR TO THE CABIN AND THINKING “BOY HAVE WE GOT A ONCE IN LIFETIME STORY TO TELL ABOUT A LARGE NORTHERN THAT GOT AWAY.’” JUST THEN THERE WAS A COMMOTION ON THE PIER AND WHEN WE WENT DOWN TO SEE WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT WE SAW THAT ONE OF THE MEN FROM KANSAS CITY (A BASS FISHERMAN) HAD NETTED A NORTHERN APPROX. 36″ LONG THAT HAD TAKEN A WALLEYE HE HAD ON THE LINE. WITH THE HELP OF HIS FRIENDS THEY WERE ABLE TO NET THE FISH BEFORE IT COULD RELEASE THE WALLEYE.
THE BASS FISHERMAN WAS HESITANT TO HANDLE THIS LARGE FISH BECAUSE OF THE MEAT GRINDER MOUTH IT DISPLAYED. I SHOWED HIM HOW TO HANDLE THE FISH SO THEY COULD TAKE PICTURES AND SHOWED HIM HOW TO PROPERLY RELEASE THIS LARGE FISH SO IT WOULD NOT WIND UP BELLY UP.
I DECIDED THAT MY STORY OF JUST HAVING HAD THE NORTHERN HIT MY WALLEYE WAS REALLY ANTICLIMACTIC, SO I DID NOT TELL MY STORY, AFTER THE GENTLEMAN FROM K.C. WAS ABLE TO LAND HIS LARGE NORTHERN.
THE STORY DOESN’T END HERE. THE NEXT DAY CHUCK AND I DECIDED TO HIT THE ROCK PILE REEDS AGAIN WHEN LO AND BEHOLD I CRANKED IN A 38″ NORTHERN. WAS THE SAME FISH ENTERTAINING ALL OF US? OR DO YOU REALLY HAVE A CONTRACT WITH THE LARGE NORTHERNS TO ENTERTAIN YOUR GUESTS IN TRADE FOR THE DEAD MINNOWS YOU THROW IN THE LAKE.
-BEST REGARDS, GUY NEUK!
It was mid-day and the wind was blowing, but not too hard. We had caught plenty of fish and were wanting to enjoy the sun and fish some more without working very much.. That’s when we spotted a nice long drift between the shore and an island. Checking it out with the depth finder, we saw big fish sitting on the bottom at 20, 22, and 24 feet. We headed back and positioned ourselves for the drift. With a slow drift and a minnow on a jig, my wife and I nailed walleyes in the 22 to 27 inch range. You can bet we’ll check this spot out again this summer!
Judy: Thanks for the note. In all probability we will bring the depth finder, we are currently working with the airlines, if we get stuck I’ll let you know. I just have to tell you, we have been working on this trip since March of 2001 and there is not one thing that we asked that you did not accommodate…..unbelievable. I’m looking at your brochure and based on all you have done for us maybe you might want to consider adding something to your “How do we do it” section of the brochure…..you should add something like……”We listen to what our guests want and find it difficult to say we can’t do that.” Thanks again and I will be in contact with you before you leave for the lake in May.
I would like to congratulate you on adhering to your slot limit, and catch and release program. We experienced fantastic fishing! Our best catch was Colleen’s Northern at 42 1/2″ with Don just behind her with 2 near that size- a 40 incher, & a 39 1/2 incher. Don also had 6 large Walleye over 24″, and one at 28 1/2″, all caught while Northern Fishing. We never tried for Walleyes and still caught around two hundred.
Thank you for our BEST fishing trip ever! It was everything promised! Our last trip to Canada was 17 yrs. ago and the fishing did not compare!
I just want to send you a note of thanks for the great time that my two sons and myself had this week at your lodge. You and your staff went out of your way to see to our comfort and to be sure that the fishing experience would be one to remember. It would be hard to say what was the best: the food, fishing, company, view or service.
I just wanted to say again, Thanks for a wonderful time. I really enjoyed my stay at Uchi.
Please convey my many thanks to April and Noah. They were very courteous and extremely polite. You all get, along with the lodge, my 5 star rating.
I hope the rest of the season is as great for all of you as my time there was for me.
This summers “Uchi Experience” was by far the best ever. The weather was great, the fishing was better than ever and most important I had my four sons, two son-in-laws and my fishing partner and good friend Jim along to share the “Uchi Experience”. You and your crew helped to make this trip a memory to be treasured by each one of us. Bob enjoyed it the most because he caught the most fish (139) second only to me of course. More importantly he got to spend quality time with his dad and brothers, something that doesn’t happen often enough since he lives in California. All totaled we caught and released close to 800 fish. We ate like kings thanks to you and your crew. I’m looking forward to next year’s trip. Enclosed are a couple photos of my gang. If you’re asked why there’s no fish in the photos, tell them we RELEASED them. Thanks again for treating us so special, we loved it.
