img_5582a.jpgHi Judy,

Sheila and I visited during the last week of August, a few weeks later than the previous 2 times we’ve been here. Upon our arrival, which was delayed slightly due to fog, we were able to get in a couple of hours on the lake before meeting the ‘veterans’ at shore lunch.

Sheila mentioned to some of the folks that we had some luck with the northerns, but hadn’t located any walleyes.  One particular fellow, we’ll call Clyde (veterinarian, emergency medical tech, overall jack-of-all trades - you know who you are), img_5611a.jpgwent so far as to provide us with a couple of tinsel-skirted jig heads and detailed directions to one of his successful walleye spots. That afternoon we proceeded to catch one after another, mostly in the keeper size range of 15″ to 17″. Just when we thought we might call it a day, Sheila’s rod bent to the water line. What we thought to be an opportunist pike turned out to be a 27″ walleye, the largest catch of that week.

Clyde got a kick out of chiding us for using ‘his’ lures, and ‘his’ spot to catch what he had spent the previous few days searching for. The next day I managed to land a 24″ walleye. On our last day we decided to count fish. After less than 2 hours fishing in one spot we landed 49 walleyes. The pike weren’t hitting the top-water baits as eagerly as in the previous trips, but we still managed to bag a number of decent sized fish using spoons and spinners.

Overall, I would (and have continually) highly recommend Uchi to anyone looking for a place to catch quality fish. The numbers and sizes are both exceptional. The staff is among the friendliest and most attentive that you’ll find anywhere.
