The week of June 19th that we were at Uchi brought 4 totally different weather days. . Day 1 was raining and windy but the fishing was great. We caught a lot of walleye on twister tails and 1/4 jigs in 1 to 15′ of water. The next day was a bluebird day with the fishing being tougher , but we fished the shaded areas and were successful with the same tackle. Day 3 brought a mixture of weather. We got to use our rain suits and had our best day of fishing. We fished the wind blown shores and caught fish on every cast during a couple hours sessions. Again a lot of plastic and some small crank baits.
That day I caught on the way to the shore lunch, in the span of 1/2 hour …… 31 1/2″ walleye (muskie rod and crank bait 6′ down fishing for Northern), next cast a 27″ walleye, next cast a 36″ Northern and then a hit on the surface and then a multiple fish follow up. Fishing continued to be good and finished up that way the next day. All in all we had the best fishing of the my 3 trips I have made. Every trip the fishing has gotten better, so we are counting on big things again.
A thank you for all the wonderful times we have had at your great fishery”…Of course, Jim and I love Uchi - it is one of my favorite places on Earth and you and your staff are just great.
We’re sending you a few pictures of some of the fish we caught during our 13th trip to Uchi. We had a great time and caught a lot of fish and lot of oversize walleye and northern pike. The fish keep getting bigger and fatter each year” This was our grandson’s second trip. He didn’t want to go home. Looking forward to next year
I’ll start off by saying that we caught over 650 fish for the seven days, mostly walleye but plenty of northern, too. Most of the walleye came out of 12 to 25 feet of water, mostly on submerged humps or ridges, and mostly fishing vertical, almost right under the boat, with twister tails, spoons, and twister tails w/minnows. Our walleye ranged all sizes up to 7 pounds, most of them being in the 15 to 20 inch range. We had many #3, #4, and #5 pounders as well.
Most of our northern came from the same spots as the walleye, sometimes hitting our walleye as we brought them in. But we did find a few places shallow, (7 feet or less, weedy bays) that we could catch northern and walleye on jerk baits, a couple of the walleye in the 5 pound range. Our largest northern was probably #11 pounds, with many #8’s, #9’s, and #10’s, but most of those were at night.
The conditions during our trip (August 17-23) had the lake with plenty of water, mostly between 61 to 66 degrees, and not a lot of exposed weeds. We had a couple days of rain and wind, but the weather didn’t seem to affect the fishing adversely at all, even on the bright, clear days. At one point in the trip, we were sitting on one of our favorite spots, (a place we caught 80 fish on one day without moving the boat more than 30 feet) and watched another party barely a hundred and fifty yards away catching fish as consistently, sometimes more consistently, than us. it was amazing, so many fish. We had another great trip and want to thank you for your hospitality and the warmth and friendliness of the wonderful staff that took care of our every need! A truly wonderful experience. Have a great sport-show season and don’t work too hard.
Hi there Judy,
I wanted to drop you a note to say that we had a great time this past week and really caught some fish. Your place is just fantastic and your staff is always very accommodating and friendly. I recommend it to many friends.
How’s it going? Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how much Jerry and I enjoyed our time at Uchi. You and your staff did an outstanding job in all areas. The fishing for walleye was beyond expectations, what a fishery!!!
Seeing 6 moose in one day (9 the total trip)! And having the opportunity to photograph them in the wild. And one bull entertained us in the water eating cabbage for at least 30 minutes. And we also got very close to a cow with 2 calves. Wonderful experiences!
Thanks so much for the wonderful time. Many of us caught more and larger fish than we ever have before. You run a very comfortable camp. I know how hard it is to run a business and you have set an example of taking care of people. I was very comfortable having my son and father in your care. Thanks loads and Best Wishes.
Judy, just a short note to tell you how much the five of us (Jim, Tom , Tom , Jack, & I) enjoyed fishing Uchi Lake. As you know Jim and I have made Uchi our annual trip for more then six years bringing with us from time to time my sons and son-in-laws and know Jack (2nd visit), Tom & Tom. Once again we moved the benchmark up by caching and releasing 185 walleye’s on the second day of our trip, and that was without fishing any of our evening hot spots. Wish you the best.
CHUCK AND I WERE CASTING SPINNERS TO THE REEDS OFF THE ROCK PILE BY THE ISLAND ACROSS FROM THE LODGE. I GOT A NICE STRIKE AND BEGAN CRANKING IN A NICE 18″ WALLEYE AND SUDDENLY GOT ANOTHER SLAM ON MY LINE, HEAVIER AND STRONGER.AS I GOT THE FISH TO THE BOAT WE COULD SEE A LARGE (36″) NORTHERN HAD THE WALLEYE IN IT’S MOUTH CROSSWISE AND AS SOON AS IT GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO SEE THE BOAT RELEASED THE WALLEYE AND HEADED FOR DEEP WATER. WE CONTINUED TO CAST THAT EVENING AND WENT BACK OVER THAT SPOT WITH NO SURPRISING RESULTS.
WE CAME IN FOR THE EVENING AND WERE CARRYING OUR GEAR TO THE CABIN AND THINKING “BOY HAVE WE GOT A ONCE IN LIFETIME STORY TO TELL ABOUT A LARGE NORTHERN THAT GOT AWAY.’” JUST THEN THERE WAS A COMMOTION ON THE PIER AND WHEN WE WENT DOWN TO SEE WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT WE SAW THAT ONE OF THE MEN FROM KANSAS CITY (A BASS FISHERMAN) HAD NETTED A NORTHERN APPROX. 36″ LONG THAT HAD TAKEN A WALLEYE HE HAD ON THE LINE. WITH THE HELP OF HIS FRIENDS THEY WERE ABLE TO NET THE FISH BEFORE IT COULD RELEASE THE WALLEYE.
THE BASS FISHERMAN WAS HESITANT TO HANDLE THIS LARGE FISH BECAUSE OF THE MEAT GRINDER MOUTH IT DISPLAYED. I SHOWED HIM HOW TO HANDLE THE FISH SO THEY COULD TAKE PICTURES AND SHOWED HIM HOW TO PROPERLY RELEASE THIS LARGE FISH SO IT WOULD NOT WIND UP BELLY UP.
I DECIDED THAT MY STORY OF JUST HAVING HAD THE NORTHERN HIT MY WALLEYE WAS REALLY ANTICLIMACTIC, SO I DID NOT TELL MY STORY, AFTER THE GENTLEMAN FROM K.C. WAS ABLE TO LAND HIS LARGE NORTHERN.
THE STORY DOESN’T END HERE. THE NEXT DAY CHUCK AND I DECIDED TO HIT THE ROCK PILE REEDS AGAIN WHEN LO AND BEHOLD I CRANKED IN A 38″ NORTHERN. WAS THE SAME FISH ENTERTAINING ALL OF US? OR DO YOU REALLY HAVE A CONTRACT WITH THE LARGE NORTHERNS TO ENTERTAIN YOUR GUESTS IN TRADE FOR THE DEAD MINNOWS YOU THROW IN THE LAKE.
-BEST REGARDS, GUY NEUK!
